We believe that all engagement between US-based peoples and institutions and Latin America, be it pedagogical or scholarly, should be characterized by openness and reciprocity. In fields spanning the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, Rutgers faculty and student research generates new insights into Latin American culture and society, politics and economics, and environment and ecology. Through courses, programs of study, and extracurricular events, we help students and faculty better understand the diverse cultures and histories of the complex region, and the many ways in which the United States and Latin America are deeply conjoined. The mission of the Rutgers University Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) is to promote pedagogy, research, and service in and about the broader region known as Las Américas.
Students of the contemporary African environment also benefit from interdisciplinary CAS member faculty in Geography, Human Ecology, and Anthropology." There are CAS faculty members who work directly on African history and numerous others whose work in comparative, global, imperial or Diaspora history contribute indirect ways to a deeper understanding of African history. Rutgers also has unusual strength in African linguistics, as well as in African social and cultural history. With a number of CAS faculty members specializing in literatures of Africa in Arabic, English, French, Hausa, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swahili, Rutgers is an extraordinary center for the study of literatures of Africa. Its programming includes departments throughout Rutgers University, including New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden. CAS informs a broader public through a vigorous outreach program of community projects and educators' workshops for K-12 teachers.
